Dr Ione - Thrilling testimony on CAR

In 1968 Dr Ione, then a young medical student from Italy, came to the newly independent Central African Republic to help run a hospital in the north. Since then, she has spent thirty-four years in the country, living through rebellions, mutinies, intermittent progress and desperation. She has shared the hope of the population and supported their initiatives. Today, she is still by their side, helping them back up onto their feet. Refugees returning, while others flee from areas only kilometres away

At the same time that UNHCR is registering 10,500 new refugees from the Béhili area in CAR, thousands of Central African refugees are returning from Chad to the area of Moyenne Sido and Kabo, only 50km east of Béhili. Others flee violent conflict and attacks by armed bandits to become displaced within their own country.

Life returns to destroyed town

Birao, a town in the northeast of the Central African Republic near the border with Darfur, was in large parts destroyed in March 2007 during fighting between the UFDR militant group and Government troops, forcing almost the entire population to flee. Now, people have begun returning to rebuild their lives.
